The Devon Hedge Laying Competition was run by the Devon Hedge Group and aimed to promote and publicise traditional skills and good practice in hedge management. The final competition has now been judged and the Devon Hedge Group are now developing a new scheme called the Devon Hedge Awards. Further details will follow soon.

2018/19 Results
Open Class: Best layed hedge
Winners: Don Gaskins and Chris Bond, who did a very neat hedge laying job near Morwellham. They established some very good hedgerow trees and created a very stockproof hedge.
Congratulations Don and Chris
Second: Roger Parris. This was another high quality section of laid hedge with some excellent crooks.
Third: Chris Townsend. A difficult hedge to lay but a lovely stockproof barrier created.
The judges were looking for a combination of stock-proofness, the quantity and quality of re-growth, traditional style, wildlife value and overall appearance. The work should have included casting-up and/or bank restoration.
Each year the winners is presented with a magnificent trophy, with their name engraved on it, which they may keep for the year. The trophy is a billhook carved from hedge oak set in a partially cut ash stem. It was commissioned from Martin Beat in 2015.
Our thanks to all entrants for their hard work restoring and maintaining Devon’s unique and wonderful hedges.
